Basement Dweller Hotline

first there was the dead and decaying bird wedged between her mattress and the wall. now there’s bugs flying around her closet. not to mention the supernatural phenomena that plagued her room upstairs (postcards shifting position on the walls?!?) what’s up with this weird shit deadstar?

in anticipation of the entomology course i plan on taking, we started a discussion last night that ended up feeling like my first lesson. we were trying to identify a creepy crawly that she often saw as a child: a long body with a yellow stripe and even longer legs on both sides that looked like “snuffleupagus’ eyelashes”. the images of centipedes that i pulled up only resulted in her mom coming to the basement and telling her to stop screaming :) no luck? let’s move on then. okay, so show me this bug you’ve been seeing for the past two weeks. within seconds she finds one and i’m at my favourite site trying to identify it.

The Webbing Clothes Moth (Tineola bisselliella):
-1/4 an inch long
-golden yellow with a satiny sheen
-larvae feed on textiles while adults are harmless

New mission: find this larvae that prefers to feed on animal based textiles (e.g. wool)

after sifting through a pile of sweaters, we pulled out an ikea rug that turned out to be the site of infestation. eewww...so many little worms and empty casings! she wanted to barf. frankly, i would have too if it had been my closet. we looked up its lifecycle and decided that the problem was pretty much taken care of once we discarded the rug. the first thing i did when i got home was to check the rug i had stored away. i hope class turns out to be just as interesting :) hello, nerd.

that's dirty. but very humourous because it was her and not us =)
