For several days this week, as soon as dad got home we would work on math problems. Chinese much? They were simple algebraic word problems but there is one about chickens that I still don't know how to solve without simply using trial and error. I've asked several people for help, but I'm not getting any concrete answers.
Q: The prices for three kinds of chicken are $5 for 1, $3 for 1, or $1 for 3. How many of each type of chicken do you buy if you are to spend $100 for a total of 100 chickens?
A: 8, 11, 81 (respectively) -- from dad
also 4, 18, 78 or 12, 4, 84 -- from a mathematics major
Is that it? Is there no way to find out with certainty how many solutions exist and what they are?

wow.. The are lotsa answers u can derive from the question..
$5+$3+$1=$9 (5chickens for $9)
$100/$9=10 r $10(groups of chicken)
5x10=50 chickens (for $90)
R $10,
either 2 for $5 each ($10) or
2 for $3 + 12 $4 ($10) or
30 for $10.
Add them together and that's the answer??
